Kampung Baru - Makan-makan at KL

Kampung Baru - The Old Against The New Bakcdrop

Yesterday night, we decided to have dinner with mom and dad at Kampung Baru. This is the second time I visited the place. The first time was in end 2009 to try the Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa and since I was not impressed by the price and the food (it was served cold) and the cleanliness (I saw cockroaches), have not ventured there since. So, this time around, we tried seafood instead.

We don't really know which stall is nice, so we tried Suraya Seafood based on the crowd and ambience. Turns out it didn't disappoint. Food was good and reasonably priced. It was really a satisfying meal. Definitely wouldn't mind going there again :)

Enjoy the pics.

Hmm...whilst it's nice savoring the food, don't forget your prayers. Head to the nearby surau to perform your prayers.

Head to this block at the end of the road for the surau

Then enjoy the view while walking back to the restaurant.

Resepi:

1 1/2 sudu makan mentega
1 1/2 sudu makan tepung gandum

Dicampur bersama kemudian dipanaskan di atas kuali.
Kemudian masukkan kesemua bahan-bahan di bawah:

50g bawang besar dihiris
1 /2 sudu teh thyme kering
1/2 sudu  teh basil kering
1/8 sudu serbuk teh lada hitam
1/8 sudu teh lada sulah
1/8 sudu teh kicap
3/4 cawan air
1/2 kiub daging lembu Knorr's

Devil Steak Sauce

Resepi:

2 sudu makan jem raspberry
2 sudu makan gula perang
2 sudu makan sos Worcestershire
2 sudu makan sos tomato
1/2 sudu teh black vinegar

Selamat mencuba!

My Simple Resepi : Steak, Salad dan Mashed Potato

resipi steak best
My simple steak recipe

1/4 cawan minyak canola
1/4 cawan root beer
2 sudu makan sos Worcestershire
2 sudu makan sos teriyaki
2 sudu makan sos steak Heinz
1 sudu teh garam bawang putih (garlic salt)
1/2 sudu teh lada hitam (ditumbuk)
1/2 sudu teh daun basil kering
1/ sudu teh serbuk thyme
1/2 sudu teh rosemary kering

Resepi ni lama dah tak cuba, semalam cuba lagi, tapi tak jumpa bahan-bahan kat Cold Storage, sos steak tak ada, jadi I pakai sos bbq, sos teriyaki pulak yang dijual yang ada wine so I tak pakai sos teriyaki, A&W root beer dah jadi perisa sasparilla pulak..lepas tu I malas nak beli basil, thyme dan rosemary kering jadi I beli fresh thyme and fresh rosemary, basil I tak guna, I guna Italian herbs kering yang ada di rumah I je. Dan I tambah 1/2 bawang besar didadu. Hasilnya? Ok lah jugak masak campak2 tapi yang original resepi kat atas tu lagi sedap.

idea berbuka puasa
Salad dan mashed potato sebagai side dish

Yang mashed potato tu resepi dia:

1. 4 biji kentang (rebus, tos dan lenyek)
2. 75 ml atau 5 sudu makan light cooking cream
3. 1/2 slice cheddar cheese
4. garam / lada hitam (ikut suka)

Kalau tak letak kiub tu tambah sikit garam kalau terasa tawar ye.

Ni resepi cukup untuk 2-3 orang je makan.

Resepi Sos Mashed Potato:

2 sudu makan mentega
2 sudu makan tepung gandum

Dicampur bersama kemudian dipanaskan di atas kuali.
Kemudian masukkan semua bahan-bahan di bawah:

50 g bawang besar dihiris
1/2 sudu teh thyme kering
1/2 sudu teh basil kering
1/8 sudu teh serbuk lada hitam
1/8 sudu teh lada sulah
1/8 sudu teh kicap
3/4 cawan air
1/2 kiub knorr's perisa daging

Panaskan hingga ia pekat.

Resepi salad:

Hari ni I malas, jadi salad ni I campak-campak je, i beli satu paket salad yang dah siap lepas tu I tambah salad dressing:

1. 2 sudu makan madu
2. sedikit perahan jus lemon (I pakai sehiris je)
3. 1 sudu makan minyak zaitun

gaul semua salad dressing tu, campak kat salad tadi pastu tambahkan apa2 buah (epal ke pir ke mangga ke dragon fruit ke terpulanglah, i pakai strawberry sebab memang dah ada dalam peti ais, tapi strawberry I masam jadi I tabur gula sikit atas strawberry tu) dan untuk ada rasa rangup-rangup sikit tambah sikit kekacang, Kacang tanah boleh, badam boleh, kuaci pun ok tapi I cuma ada walnut (tak habis2 dah berbulan kat rumah) jadi I sangar atas api kasi rangup sikit pastu I tabur atas salad. Dah jadi!

Kalau suka jangan lupa share tau! Terima Kasih!

Will Facebook Charge A Fee? No!

FACEBOOK JUST RELEASED THEIR PRICE GRID FOR MEMBERSHIP. $9.99 PER MONTH FOR GOLD MEMBER SERVICES, $6.99 PER MONTH FOR SILVER MEMBER SERVICES, $3.99 PER MONTH FOR BRONZE MEMBER SERVICES, FREE IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU. PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON IF NOT YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED IF YOU DO NOT PAY...

Sounds familiar? Hmm.. when I first received it, I was quite skeptical, as charging fees seems to move away from their business strategy. A huge number of users will definitely just shut down their account, hence leading to Facebook's plunging popularity and dwindling advertising revenue.

And when exactly is "midnight tonight"? 1 January 2009? 2010? 2011? or even 2012?

Isn't Facebook responsible for disseminating information? Why put the onus on the users?  and free account for those who share the info?then why charge in the first place?

Questions questions questions.. let's just google search for the answer. Here's what I found from the Facebook Blog:

We will never use any of the following methods to tell you information, or ask for you to take an action:

  • Your Wall
  • An inbox message from a friend - in other words, chain letters
  • Messages spread through Applications - If an app is telling you that Facebook is about to shut down, report it.

We'd like to clarify a few things for the record:

  • We are not shutting down accounts that are not "active" enough
  • We are not going to start charging you to use Facebook.
  • We will never ask you to send us your password or login information.
  • We will never put the responsibility on YOU to send information to your friends. If we have information we need to share, it;s our job to get the word out.
  • When we do communicate to you about the site (with the exception of posts made on this blog) it will always be from a collective Facebook. You won't hear from me, personally, or from Mark, or from Dustin, or from any of the Facebook bloggers you've seen here.

Apparently this hoax has been ongoing since 2007, well it's now 2011 and Facebook is still not charging. Need more proof? See it for yourself here

Facebook - Kena Bayar Ke?

Dr Altaf's Child Clinic / Klinik Kanak-Kanak TTDI

Dr Altaf is our trusted pediatrician in KL. This is one kids doctor who is kind and really friendly, he takes the time to listen to your concerns and dispense advice accordingly. Very good with kids too. I have never seen a child doctor who uses a stethoscope with a toy plastic tiger on it to distract his small patients.

He is the only pediatrician who prescribed for my son SINGULAIR, a tasteless powder to add in my child's drink (for cough) and the suppository "Paracetamol" and "Voren" when I complained that my son is absolutely uncooperative in taking oral medication. He will also prescribed a better tasting medication or a once a day dosage for my son.

The baby and child clinic is spacious with lots of toys for the kids and magazines and books for the parents. My kids always think that they are at a playground.

The sitting area in the child clinic is quite dispersed too and decorated cheerfully. The toilet is clean and even comes with a child's seat. There is also a separate baby room/nursing room.

The only difficult part is the parking. (KL, need I say more).

Price is cheaper than PD's at Mont Kiara or Bangsar's Village.

Register your child's name on the waiting list of the child clinic and if the waiting time is going to be long, grab a teh tarik and roti canai at Devi's Corner a few rows down.

Khadijah Ibrahim's Restaurant : Khadijah's Kitchen

Khadijah Ibrahim's Restaurant : Khadijah's Kitchen at Petaling Jaya

Today, we ventured out of Taman Tun and headed to Petaling Jaya to try out a celebrity restaurant called Khadijah's Kitchen. It is owned by the famous Khadijah Ibrahim.

The interior of the restaurant is quite cosy with a lot of wood and flowers arrangement in clear vases. Memorabilia of famous singers lined the walls in a tasteful manner.

My mummy with my no 2

As it was lunchtime, we ordered dishes to go with plain white rice. Below was what we ordered:

Ayam dishes: ayam goreng kunyit (top), ayam goreng cili kering (right) and ayam daun kari (left)

Among the ayam dishes, I really like the ayam goreng cili kering, it was nice, not too spicy and with a hint of sweetness. While the ayam goreng kunyit is just normal home cooked fried chicken. The ayam daun kari was a bit disappointing though, I thought based on how it looks it will taste fabulous, you know spicy and sweet with crispy fried chicken, but like most dishes in this restaurant, the dish taste very "light" and "healthy".

Egg-fried sliced brinjals (front) and Kari Ikan Jenahak (back)

My mum chose Egg-fried sliced brinjal and it was surprisingly delicious, the brinjal was naturally sweet on the inside and crunchy on the outside, it comes with sambal belacan dip, which in my opinion doesn't really go with the dish and in my mom's opinion lacking some sugar.

The fish curry was simple and tasty enough but the fish was fried first before being put in the curry thus the curry taste was not absorbed by the fish's flesh; my dad said he preferred the fish to be cooked together with the curry. It didn't make much difference to me though as I don't really go for fish curry.

Bergedel that came mini in size

Hubby ordered bergedel; his favorite side dish. We were surprised by the size of the bergedel, really bite sized, so I wasn't really expecting much from it but it turned out to be one of the better dishes that we ordered. The potato was sweet and soft and yummy though slightly oily.

Tahu Telor

Mom ordered tahu telor, her favorite dish; which she will order in any restaurant that serves it. The tahu comes garnished with shredded carrot and bean sprouts. The dish is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, but the secret of any great tahu telor is in the sauce and sad to say the sauce here is not very outstanding. It is good but not outstanding. A bit high on the chilli and low on the sugar.  I prefer Rumah Minang's (in Singapore at the back of Sultan Mosque) tahu telor.

Next came the dessert (of course, only me and mom ordered, the guys stayed away from desserts)

Pulut Durian
Mom ordered pulut durian, the pulut comes in a ball shape and is swimming in a bowl of sweet thick durian gravy with some durian flesh in it. Nice :)

Bubur Cha Cha

Yours truly ordered bubur cha cha and was really looking forward to it. When the bowl came, I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it. The gravy was very thin, hmm.. not very "lemak-ish" and the bits inside (tapioca yam etc) doesn't taste like it's been cooked together with the coconut milk, the tapioca wasn't very cooked and the yam was either over cooked, over ripe or unfresh, the sides of it already turned black. Needless to say I didn't finish my dessert.

When we came, there was only 1 other table occupied in the restaurant, making us a bit apprehensive in trying it out, but more customers came when we were eating, though I noticed most of them go for the noodles, so maybe rice is not their forte? or we didn't order their specialty dishes?

Starfruit Juice and Sirap Lime

Hubby and I did enjoy our food though, it was a refreshing change from D'Cengkih and Santai Restaurant that we are used to. Like I mentioned above, food tasted light, mild and "healthy". I would say that the are quite restraint in their use of sugar, spices and salt. Even our drinks are what the malay describes as "manis-manis buah" (direct transalation would be "sweet as a fruit" i.e. not too sweet) If you are in the area, you can check out this restaurant, but I don't think it's worth the drive if you are not in the area.

Butik Jari Jemari Ku at TTDI

Dear Readers, please note that this boutique no longer operates at the below mentioned premise.

Store front is not very prominent and can easily be missed

Today, I got to check out this hijab boutique that I have been dying to, finally had an excuse since most of my hijabs are stranded in Singapore; honestly it's tiring keeping track of which wardrobe is where and even more tiring lugging them around.

I had originally wanted to order some shawls online but due to some bad experience buying abayas online, decided against it.

This store has a variety of hijabs (the standard instant hijabs and also some shawls) and inners, plain or with designs or embellishments. They quality is really good. They also carry a limited number of long dresses (I don't really like it, but it's nice enough) and the standard inner shirts that you pair with  sleeveless dresses or see through ones.

Tudung CT on left and satin shawls on right

What I zoomed in immediately was the graduated colored 100% polyester shawls that they are selling for RM30 and the inner with awning (that means it comes with some sort of plastic inside that will keep the inner from falling flat on your face) RM18 for plain cotton ones (really soft) and RM25 for ones that is studded with Swarovski stones. Would love to buy the Tudung CT, if it had come in a simpler design, I think the stones are too overwhelming.

Would have taken more pictures (the girl was very helpful and obliging) but a man coming out from the back room was a bit peeved, so not wanting to say that I am a newbie blogger I just put the camera aside and pay for my goods :)

My Stash

I bought graduated black / grey, graduated pink / purple and a solid brown. I love the graduated colors of the shawls and its soft texture. Tried on the purple pink shawl today and got some stares from the ladies hmm.. dunno whether its because I look weird or too good :p chucked the inner cos I still don't feel comfy wearing inner.

Here is a picture of me wearing the graduated grey/black tudung without the inner (I will only write a post on how to wear the shawl as on the left side if there is any request; or if I have nothing better to do :p )

Sri Munawwarah Design @ TTDI

Sri Munawwarah Design at TTDI

A few of my friends asked me about Sri Munawwarah Design, the name is quite popular as they sponsored the hijabs of some popular television icons in Malaysia.

I have been there maybe twice but never bought anything. I think the prices are a bit too high for the design that they offer. Their designs are mostly plain and they like to use Lycra material (which I think looks great on people who are super skinny or have perfect form; but then again who has except models?) For the price that they are selling, I would rather buy silk or chiffon with tailored designs, like nice collars and silhouette, but that's just me.

Same goes with the tudung, I guess I am never a big fan of the instant tudung especially with floral designs. I am more of the shawls and embroidery / lacy designs, Mortada scarves are more to my liking and ermm those from Macy's at Abbas Sa'ad stretch in Cairo.. sigh.. how I wish I can go there to stock up.. but those were the days..

For those who loves Sri Munawwarah and need information about their boutique, it's located at:

14 - 16 Persiaran Zaaba
Taman Tun Dr Ismail
60000 KL

The shop closes early I think, maybe at 5.30pm, best to head there before then.

Here are some pictures from their blogger for you to have an idea of their muslimah wear, for more information you should visit their blogger at http://munawwarahdesign.blogspot.com/

I like the satin inner but would rather pair it with a shawl

lurve the flowy dress but not the Lycra material and the price, I can get one tailored at half the price at JB

Would consider wearing this if I am still working at a Mosque in Singapore
